Below you can read my health journal. Please note it's a quite subjective diary. Also, I'm often (too) enthousiastic about things I try, so please keep that that in mind while reading.
Nonetheless, I hope that reading my experiences might be helpful for you.

I've updated my treatment method:

Sleep = very important

I read that melatonin production is more than doubled when you sleep in complete darkness. I made a construction above my bed, where I put a blanket on. That way, I can't see my hand in front of my eyes at nights. Result: I sleep a lot better ! And I feel a lot better during the day !



No processed foods whatsoever anymore

I used to buy my almonds (roasted and salted) at a shop in the city. One day, I felt really tired and bloated after having eaten some almonds. After some days I discovered the almonds caused this. I tried some vanilla unroasted, unsalted almonds and they caused no problems.

Conclusion : They've changed the recipe of the oil or the salt mixture by adding a forbidden SCD supplement (like starch coatings). From now on I will only eat foods that are pure and natural.. No processing whatsoever..



No fruits anymore

I discovered that even eating an apple one day, results in two-three bad days. It takes about a week on the strict no-fruit, no sugars hypoglycemia (www.survivediabetes.com) diet to totally get rid of all the symptoms.



Resulting diet: High in vegetables, meats, eggs and nuts

Right now I eat a lot of vegetables (about a kilo every day), about two- to threehundred grams of vegetables, some nuts, and some eggs. Because I'm eating so many vegetables a day, I've dropped some of my vitamin supplements. I only use L-Glutamine in the morning, a vitamin C 750mg and chromium 200ug (to aid my cells with the glucose intelorance). I combine these supplements with an MSM 1000mg, to aid with the absorption of the vitamins and minerals.



Right now, I have slept perfectly every night for the last week. I don't feel bloated at all anymore, my energy level is very high, all symptoms are gone. I only have to visit the toilet once a day.

I've been ill a couple of days (a cold/flue). I recovered amazingly fast. Also my stool remained stable.

Also, I now live on my own (since a week), together with my brother.. We really enjoy it, especially now my health is very good once again (after three years) ! I play tennis twice a week, my stamina is really good and my strength is up ! One caveat: We still have no internet over there.. So right now, I'm typing this at my parent's place. We hope to get cable-internet really soon...

I've received a new book about hypoglycemia a couple of days ago.. I've changed my lifestyle according to the guidelines in the book:

* No more high-glycemic foods (even also vegetables like peas and artichokes)

* A snack every two hours, decreasing the size of the meals

* Take some rest after eating for about 15 minutes

* Eat a snack before going to sleep

* Eat a snack when waking up and then wait 10 minutes before getting out

* Get out of bed every day (also when you don't need to get out, like in the weekend) at the same time (every saturday and sunday, when I stay in bed longer than eight hours, my blood sugar levels drop too low and the result is suffering the entire day)

I'm starting to feel better already..

Eating high-glycemic foods can make a person suffer even 72 hours later !

I ate some cashews a couple of days ago.. The next day I felt a lot worse, there was mucus in my stool again. I checked the internet and discovered that cashews do contain starch. As do peanuts.

Peanuts and cashews are also forbidden SCD Foods

Now, a couple of days after I ate the (now forbidden) cashews, I feel good again. This means I still can't digest starches and disaccharides correctly. This concludes the experiment (which I didn't intend to do so soon).

MY situation: I can't digest complex carbohydrates and besides that I'm also hypoglycemic. I'm currently treating the hypoglycemia by eating only low-glycemic foods (which are not forbidden by the SCDiet). I ate a paprika yesterday. It tasted really sweet ! My sense for sweetness has improved remarkably !

Last week (before I ate the cashews) I went to a party. I went to bed at 4 o'clock AM. After a couple of hours of sleep I felt perfect the next morning. If I would have done that before starting the hypolycemic restrictions on the diet, I would have felt really bad..

I feel like reborn.. All 100% of my symptoms are gone now.

Also I ordered some Stevia, which is a plant from South America, that tastes really sweet. It's 45 times as sweet as table sugar, but it's 0 calories and it doesn't raise the blood sugar. I use it as an alternative to sugar and honey. It can be used in every product (cake, pie, salads, everything).. It tastes much better than aspartame or saccharine and is non-toxic (asartame can cause tumors). It's being boycotted by the European Union and American FDA. Stevia is really nice for diabetics and hypoglycemics, because it doesn't raise the blood sugar, so no insulin is needed.. Also if sugar would be eaten later (after having eaten the stevia), the effect on the blood sugar is diminished.

Today, I felt perfect. I had a perfect night's sleep. No sweating.. When I looked in the mirror this morning, I saw my veins in my eyes looked perfect.. My eyes used to be red because of the blood veins.. Also my acne has almost completely disappeared..



As I'm doing really fine on this hypoglycemic/hyperinsulinemea diet, I'm starting to wonder if I can maybe eat complex carbohydrates like rye, which has a lot lower glycemic index than wheat. Check the glycemic index of a large list of foods here:

I will postpone this experiment for a while.. First I will enjoy my new health some time..



All Crohn/Colitis Patients which are overweight should consider using the hypoglycemic diet. Hypoglycemia is very often accompanied by overweight and food cravings.

Today, I felt bad...

I woke up in the morning, soaking wet ! I think I've had a hypo while sleeping.. I felt miserable when I got out.. I decided to completely stop eating carbohydrates (high-glycemic foods). I ate three boiled eggs, an advocado and some brocolli as breakfast.. I didn't feel hungry until 16:00 ! Then I ate some almonds and in the evening chicken with haricots verts..

Right now, at 00:12 I feel perfect.. I'm going to sleep now without having eaten any carbohydrates today (only some in the veggies)..

I think the single cause of all my intestinal problems is the hypoglycemia, or also call hyperinsulisme..

A hypo costs such an enormous amount of energy that you won't feel good the rest of the day.. I think I might have had a hypo about every night !

Rating 9,5 ! The 10-rating is really, really close.. I ate no carbohydrates at all today ! I felt amazingly healthy and had lots of energy !

After a long day, I went to play tennis at 20:30 and kept feeling just fine.. No carbohydrates consumed at all..

In the evening at about 23:00 I did ate some grapes...

Doing really fine !

My intestines even improved ! I only need to visit the toilet once a day !

My energy level is very stable and high..

I found an article that stated that low blood sugar, and high insulin, will trigger the creation of free radicals.. Problems to the eyes, the blood veins and the heart are the result.. Interesting..

Also, Three years ago I was in Paris for a Robot Soccer Competition (RoboCup). There, I felt really, really bad.. I even started to sleep during an interesting lecture. Every day I woke up in the morning, very wet (perspiration).. I think I had a hypo every night.. I now know why: Pizza is the worst food for hypoglycemia sufferes..

The ten rating is very, very near !

I'm beginning to consider rating my condition as a TEN !    Not today, but some day in the near future, it should be possible..

Yesterday I read a really nice article:

It's a site about a special diet that helps people with hypoglycemia and diabetes. It looks a lot like the SCDiet: No refined carbohydrates are allowed. However, it's a bit more strict, because large quantities of fructose or monosaccharides like in honey are also forbidden.

I put the diet to the test, and was amazed to see such an improvement in one day..

At this moment, my stomach is telling me I'm hungry, but I don't feel dizzy or weak at all.. This a completely new experience for me..

I already discovered that I shouldn't eat banana's, honey and grapejuice in the morning.. I did that once before an exam and I totally lost all energy during the exam, which lasted from 9 to 12 in the morning..

At about 12 o'clock my energy level returned. At that moment I had only made 30% of the exam, while I could have finished it by then    ..

The breakfast I ate today was completely different. I only drank water and ate a cake made from almonds, eggs, bananas and honey. In fact this is still suboptimal, because the bananas and the honey still contain too much sugar. At lunch I ate chicken with cauliflower and olives. Right now it's 17:47 and I don't feel weak at all..

I will have to optimize it a bit further. I'll have to increase the proteins and fats and decrease all sugars.. My grapejuice drinking times are over (15% fructose+glucose!)..

I think hypoglycemia and IBD go hand in hand very often, so if you feel week, anxious or depressed when you ate sugar or refined foods (like wheat), please go and check your bloodsugar and try the diet above..

Feeling fine today.. I've received the medical files from the hospital. I've published my blood test results on the site.

It's nice to see that my leucocytes level (white blood cells) is lower than ever before. My red blood cell count is higher than ever before and the sedimentation level is lower than ever before..

I can conclude that the SCDiet helps me even better than the prednison does    !

I think the nine-ratings will show up more often now.. It took some time, but my health is once again restored. Today, I started taking glucosamine and glutamine supplements.. I checked Pubmed, but I couldn't really find dramatic positive results as regards to intestines permeability.. Both supplements are safe, so I will use them for some time to see if they might help.

I have a bit more acne than before. That might be because of the almonds, to which I seem to be allergic.. That's the only allergic effect it has however. My intestines are working just fine..

I see the allergy problem as a second-level problem, not associated with the primary-level problem: The inflammation (which is now gone) of my intestines..

I'll keep you updated.

Weight update: 74 kilo's on the scale !

Today, I went to my physician again..

He was very happy I was still in good health..

My blood test results were perfect. No problems at all..

He will send me a copy of my medical files. I will post some data from those files here.



Today I was feeling a bit tired. I went to bed a bit late last night.. The typical light-feeling in my head wasn't there luckily ..

I've reached the nine rating finally !

I've been eating a lot of home-baked almondcake.. It tastes really good..

I used to eat a lot of bananas before last week.. I think that was the bottleneck for me.. Perhaps the bananas weren't ripe enough and still contained starches..

Also, I was chatting with my brother yesterday, and he was eating cookies (wheat) and drinking tea. Then I remembered, I used to eat a lot of cookies and drink a lot of tea with two teaspoons of refined sugar in it before I got ill more than three years ago..

Perhaps that has triggered my Bacteria-Crohn !

I'm doing fine, but I haven't reached the nine rating yet.. I've found a new source for my almonds. The new blender we've got works really nice, so now I can make my own almond flour. I've baked some muffins and cakes and they really taste good..



It's also very handy to take along when I go somewhere.



I think I might also have a leaky gut. I think bacteria-crohn and the leaky gut are very much related, because bacteria crohn often results in a leaky gut.. I have ordered glucosamine and glutamine. I hope these supplements will accelerate the healing..



I think I've got a leaky gut, because I'm allergic to about everything I've eaten.. I ate almonds, cheese, lettuce, tomato's, etc.. In the allergy test that were exactly the foods I was allergic to. At that time I was not allergic to milk, wheat and eggs.. So I started eating those and a couple of weeks later I was tested again and this time I was allergic to milk, wheat and eggs.. That can't be a coincidence..

I've ignored the allergy diet since last sunday and now I'm eating all the foods that are allowed by the SCDiet. This includes the cheese, almonds, eggs and tomato's..

I'm slowly feeling better every day.

My weight is now 73 kilo's..

I feel I'm getting stronger physically day by day. Also my muzzles are growing very rapidly..



The nine rating will be there really soon.. I can feel it..

Slowly I'm starting to feel better and better.

I think the seven weeks will be needed to regain my health completely.



This shows what enormous effects the eating of forbidden SCD foods has on my health ! One week of forbidden foods equals seven weeks of healing !



About the pig duodenum..

I don't think it helped me.. I think the problem is only in the second phase of digestion.

Please read the testimonial on the bottom of David Gregg's webpage about Crohn. Another autism/crohn patient has had success with the secretin/pig duodenum treatment !

I've been following the SCDiet for some weeks more now.. Slowly my strength and energy is returning..



After one week of eating wheat and sugar, etc (forbidden foods according to the SCDiet) I needed several weeks to regain my condition. My condition is now slowly going up to the eight-rating..

It's a very nice feeling to know that my condition improves every day..



According to my statistics, it took SEVEN WEEKS to regain my health. I started the SCDiet a week before I received the DMSO. That must have been November 15th, 2000. January the 6th, I felt perfect ( a nine-rating for my condition).



So, if it will take seven weeks again, my health should be back at the nine-rating, seven weeks after I restarted the SCDiet.

That was on Sunday, January 21st, 2001. So, by adding seven weeks, that should be the date where I should feel good once again.

That should be the first week of March.



Let's hope it will be sooner.. It's very probable that it will be sooner, because the condition I started with wasn't as bad as the condition I started with in November 2000.



I've also started a new experiment. I've received some pig duodenum powder from David Gregg. He also sent me some sparx powder.



The pig duodenum might help me, because I might possibly have a lack of digestive enzymes which should be secreted by the pineal gland. The first phase of the starch digestion is done by these enzymes.



The second phase of the starch digestion is done by the enzymes that are produced by the cells in the duodenum. They produce maltase, to digest the maltose (which is produced by the pancreatic enzymes from the starch).



We also assume that the pig duodenum contains 2nd phase enzymes. These enzymes can help me break the vicious cycle.



I started using the pig duodenum (which tastes really bad by the way.. It smells like dog food) wednesday. The first day I didn't notice any difference. Friday night I slept really good and Saturday I felt more energetic. In the evening the energy level wasn't high enough anymore.



I should perhaps start eating some forbiddden SCDiet Foods to test the effectiveness of the pig duodenum enzymes. I won't do that however, because it will take several weeks to regain my condition if the duodenum enzymes don't suffice..

We are also not certain if the enzymes would survive the stomach acids. Personally I think they might be able to resist the acids, because some of the stomach acids always enters the duodenum, before it's flushed by the bicarbonate flush from the pancreas.



I'll keep you updated..

Now, after more than a week, I'm starting to feel the way I felt before eating the wheat, corn, milk and sugar.



The mucus is getting less and less and my energy level is rising everyday..



It seems like the SCDiet was the main successful element in my treatment.

The DMSO was an extra support.

The DMSO helped me restore my large intestines function. It also gave me energy when the anemia was bad. It also removed the inflammation faster than the SCDiet could do by itself..



But the main conclusion is:

I didn't have the Iron-Crohn !

Instead I had the Bacteria-Crohn !

However, I am very convinced the DMSO did help a lot to accelerate the healing.

More than a week ago I started the diet.

As I started eating wheat, corn, sugar, I noticed my digestive system was protesting a bit. I kept on going. I carefully avoided all the foods on the red list.



I ate lettuce and cheese everyday, and those foods are now on the red list.. So now I started eating milk and corn flakes, I started baking my own bread with baking powder.. I started eating cookies..

All seemed fine, until today. That's when I felt bad.. I couldn't sleep at all that night.

The next day, my stool contained a considerable amount of mucus, I felt bloated, my energy level was down !   



That wasn't the outcome I wanted !

I quickly decided to combine the Specific CarboHydrate Diet with the Allergy diet..

So all DON'TS on the SCDiet were combined with the DON'TS on the allergy diet.. This created a new, more restrictive diet..



I hope I will feel better soon !

Llast week my blood was checked in a laboratorium in England. They added concentrations of 100 different foods to my blood samples.

Next, they put in some kind of device that can measure the white blood cell reactions..

I got the results two days ago...



This is the summary..

I'm allergic to : baking yeast, curry, lettuce, cheese, paprika, and some other foods..

I always thought wheat was a problem, but my white blood cells didn't react at all after

being exposed to wheat..



So, now I will stay on a diet where I can only eat all foods on the green list.

All other foods (the ones on the red list and all other foods that are not listed on the

green or red list) are prohibited for the next three months..



After that period, my system will be perfectly clean.. That's when I can start to introduce some foods from the red-list. With some luck, the allergic reaction will be gone.. If not, the allergy can be removed by using a vaccin, which contains the food in combination with a special substance, that helps your white blood cells recognize the food as a good substance. After several injections (or IV) with this mixture, the white blood cells will stop fighting the food over time.



So, until then, I will have to bake my own bread, without the baking yeast..
