| Sunday, May 13 2001 I've updated my treatment method:
Sleep = very important
I read that melatonin production is more than doubled when you sleep in complete darkness. I made a construction above my bed, where I put a blanket on. That way, I can't see my hand in front of my eyes at nights. Result: I sleep a lot better ! And I feel a lot better during the day !
No processed foods whatsoever anymore
I used to buy my almonds (roasted and salted) at a shop in the city. One day, I felt really tired and bloated after having eaten some almonds. After some days I discovered the almonds caused this. I tried some vanilla unroasted, unsalted almonds and they caused no problems.
Conclusion : They've changed the recipe of the oil or the salt mixture by adding a forbidden SCD supplement (like starch coatings). From now on I will only eat foods that are pure and natural.. No processing whatsoever..
No fruits anymore
I discovered that even eating an apple one day, results in two-three bad days. It takes about a week on the strict no-fruit, no sugars hypoglycemia (www.survivediabetes.com) diet to totally get rid of all the symptoms.
Resulting diet: High in vegetables, meats, eggs and nuts
Right now I eat a lot of vegetables (about a kilo every day), about two- to threehundred grams of vegetables, some nuts, and some eggs. Because I'm eating so many vegetables a day, I've dropped some of my vitamin supplements. I only use L-Glutamine in the morning, a vitamin C 750mg and chromium 200ug (to aid my cells with the glucose intelorance). I combine these supplements with an MSM 1000mg, to aid with the absorption of the vitamins and minerals.
Right now, I have slept perfectly every night for the last week. I don't feel bloated at all anymore, my energy level is very high, all symptoms are gone. I only have to visit the toilet once a day.
I've been ill a couple of days (a cold/flue). I recovered amazingly fast. Also my stool remained stable.
Also, I now live on my own (since a week), together with my brother.. We really enjoy it, especially now my health is very good once again (after three years) ! I play tennis twice a week, my stamina is really good and my strength is up ! One caveat: We still have no internet over there.. So right now, I'm typing this at my parent's place. We hope to get cable-internet really soon...

| Wednesday, April 18 2001 I've received a new book about hypoglycemia a couple of days ago.. I've changed my lifestyle according to the guidelines in the book:
* No more high-glycemic foods (even also vegetables like peas and artichokes)
* A snack every two hours, decreasing the size of the meals
* Take some rest after eating for about 15 minutes
* Eat a snack before going to sleep
* Eat a snack when waking up and then wait 10 minutes before getting out
* Get out of bed every day (also when you don't need to get out, like in the weekend) at the same time (every saturday and sunday, when I stay in bed longer than eight hours, my blood sugar levels drop too low and the result is suffering the entire day)
I'm starting to feel better already..
Eating high-glycemic foods can make a person suffer even 72 hours later !

| Sunday, April 08 2001 I ate some cashews a couple of days ago.. The next day I felt a lot worse, there was mucus in my stool again. I checked the internet and discovered that cashews do contain starch. As do peanuts.

Now, a couple of days after I ate the (now forbidden) cashews, I feel good again. This means I still can't digest starches and disaccharides correctly. This concludes the experiment (which I didn't intend to do so soon).
MY situation: I can't digest complex carbohydrates and besides that I'm also hypoglycemic. I'm currently treating the hypoglycemia by eating only low-glycemic foods (which are not forbidden by the SCDiet). I ate a paprika yesterday. It tasted really sweet ! My sense for sweetness has improved remarkably !
Last week (before I ate the cashews) I went to a party. I went to bed at 4 o'clock AM. After a couple of hours of sleep I felt perfect the next morning. If I would have done that before starting the hypolycemic restrictions on the diet, I would have felt really bad..
I feel like reborn.. All 100% of my symptoms are gone now.
Also I ordered some Stevia, which is a plant from South America, that tastes really sweet. It's 45 times as sweet as table sugar, but it's 0 calories and it doesn't raise the blood sugar. I use it as an alternative to sugar and honey. It can be used in every product (cake, pie, salads, everything).. It tastes much better than aspartame or saccharine and is non-toxic (asartame can cause tumors). It's being boycotted by the European Union and American FDA. Stevia is really nice for diabetics and hypoglycemics, because it doesn't raise the blood sugar, so no insulin is needed.. Also if sugar would be eaten later (after having eaten the stevia), the effect on the blood sugar is diminished.

| Saturday, March 31 2001 Today, I felt perfect. I had a perfect night's sleep. No sweating.. When I looked in the mirror this morning, I saw my veins in my eyes looked perfect.. My eyes used to be red because of the blood veins.. Also my acne has almost completely disappeared..
As I'm doing really fine on this hypoglycemic/hyperinsulinemea diet, I'm starting to wonder if I can maybe eat complex carbohydrates like rye, which has a lot lower glycemic index than wheat. Check the glycemic index of a large list of foods here:

I will postpone this experiment for a while.. First I will enjoy my new health some time..
All Crohn/Colitis Patients which are overweight should consider using the hypoglycemic diet. Hypoglycemia is very often accompanied by overweight and food cravings.

| Friday, March 30 2001 Today, I felt bad...
I woke up in the morning, soaking wet ! I think I've had a hypo while sleeping.. I felt miserable when I got out.. I decided to completely stop eating carbohydrates (high-glycemic foods). I ate three boiled eggs, an advocado and some brocolli as breakfast.. I didn't feel hungry until 16:00 ! Then I ate some almonds and in the evening chicken with haricots verts..
Right now, at 00:12 I feel perfect.. I'm going to sleep now without having eaten any carbohydrates today (only some in the veggies)..
I think the single cause of all my intestinal problems is the hypoglycemia, or also call hyperinsulisme..
A hypo costs such an enormous amount of energy that you won't feel good the rest of the day.. I think I might have had a hypo about every night !

| Thursday, March 29 2001 Rating 9,5 ! The 10-rating is really, really close.. I ate no carbohydrates at all today ! I felt amazingly healthy and had lots of energy !
After a long day, I went to play tennis at 20:30 and kept feeling just fine.. No carbohydrates consumed at all..
In the evening at about 23:00 I did ate some grapes...

| Monday, March 26 2001 Doing really fine !
My intestines even improved ! I only need to visit the toilet once a day !
My energy level is very stable and high..
I found an article that stated that low blood sugar, and high insulin, will trigger the creation of free radicals.. Problems to the eyes, the blood veins and the heart are the result.. Interesting..
Also, Three years ago I was in Paris for a Robot Soccer Competition (RoboCup). There, I felt really, really bad.. I even started to sleep during an interesting lecture. Every day I woke up in the morning, very wet (perspiration).. I think I had a hypo every night.. I now know why: Pizza is the worst food for hypoglycemia sufferes..
The ten rating is very, very near !

| Wednesday, March 21 2001 I'm beginning to consider rating my condition as a TEN ! Not today, but some day in the near future, it should be possible..
Yesterday I read a really nice article:

It's a site about a special diet that helps people with hypoglycemia and diabetes. It looks a lot like the SCDiet: No refined carbohydrates are allowed. However, it's a bit more strict, because large quantities of fructose or monosaccharides like in honey are also forbidden.
I put the diet to the test, and was amazed to see such an improvement in one day..
At this moment, my stomach is telling me I'm hungry, but I don't feel dizzy or weak at all.. This a completely new experience for me..
I already discovered that I shouldn't eat banana's, honey and grapejuice in the morning.. I did that once before an exam and I totally lost all energy during the exam, which lasted from 9 to 12 in the morning..
At about 12 o'clock my energy level returned. At that moment I had only made 30% of the exam, while I could have finished it by then ..
The breakfast I ate today was completely different. I only drank water and ate a cake made from almonds, eggs, bananas and honey. In fact this is still suboptimal, because the bananas and the honey still contain too much sugar. At lunch I ate chicken with cauliflower and olives. Right now it's 17:47 and I don't feel weak at all..
I will have to optimize it a bit further. I'll have to increase the proteins and fats and decrease all sugars.. My grapejuice drinking times are over (15% fructose+glucose!)..
I think hypoglycemia and IBD go hand in hand very often, so if you feel week, anxious or depressed when you ate sugar or refined foods (like wheat), please go and check your bloodsugar and try the diet above..

| Saturday, March 17 2001 Feeling fine today.. I've received the medical files from the hospital. I've published my blood test results on the site.
It's nice to see that my leucocytes level (white blood cells) is lower than ever before. My red blood cell count is higher than ever before and the sedimentation level is lower than ever before..
I can conclude that the SCDiet helps me even better than the prednison does !

| Friday, March 16 2001 I think the nine-ratings will show up more often now.. It took some time, but my health is once again restored. Today, I started taking glucosamine and glutamine supplements.. I checked Pubmed, but I couldn't really find dramatic positive results as regards to intestines permeability.. Both supplements are safe, so I will use them for some time to see if they might help.
I have a bit more acne than before. That might be because of the almonds, to which I seem to be allergic.. That's the only allergic effect it has however. My intestines are working just fine..
I see the allergy problem as a second-level problem, not associated with the primary-level problem: The inflammation (which is now gone) of my intestines..
I'll keep you updated.
Weight update: 74 kilo's on the scale !
